Review of the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988: September 2023 Update

The Australian Government is conducting a review of the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988.

The Attorney General’s Department released an Issues Paper in October 2020 and a Discussion Paper in October 2021. The Discussion Paper covered a broad range of topics, including:

The Attorney-General released the Privacy Act Review Report in February 2023 which set s out a range of proposals for reform aimed at strengthening the protection of personal information and the control individuals have over their information.

In September 2023, the Australian Government published its response to the Privacy Act Review Report. Further consultations are being undertaken to inform the further development of the reforms.
